140. The Champagne Wreck

In this episode we will head out 16 nautical miles south of the Blekinge coast in the southern Baltic Sea.There at the bottom lies a wreck that is believed to have sunk in a storm in 1861. In this episode we will head out 16 nautical miles south of the Blekinge coast in the southern Baltic Sea.
There at the bottom lies a wreck that is believed to have sunk in a storm in 1861.

The wreck has been known for some time, but after an update of the digital maps, the wreck appeared on the screen of a Polish diving team; Baltictech. They became curious and dived on the wreck.

This was during the summer of 2024 and what the divers encountered was not just any cargo, among other things, they found large quantities of bottles of champagne.

The wreck attracted a lot of attention both in Sweden and abroad when it turned out that the champagne could be identified - Louis Roederer

Now the divers are back at the site, and the podcast is with them as they dive on the wreck again.

We will meet both the captain of the diving boat Espace, Tomasz Stachura, two of the divers Michal Iwicki AND Pawel Trusynski. But also the champagne expert and diver Peter Liem

Finally, we will have a short chat with Magnus Petersson from the County Administrative Board of Blekinge County.

I det här avsnittet ska vi bege oss ut 16 sjömil söder om Blekingekusten i södra Östersjön.
För där på botten ligger ett vrak som man tror sjönk i en storm 1861.

Vraket är känt sedan tidigare, men efter en uppdateirng av de digitala kartorna dök vraket upp på skärmen hos ett polskt dykarteam; Baltictech. De blev nyfikna och dök på vraket.

Detta var under sommaren 2024 och det som mötte dykarna där nere på botten inte var vilken last som helst, bland annat så hittade stora mängder med flaskor med champagne.

Det blev stor uppmärksamhet kring vraket både i Sverige och utomlands när det visade sig att champagnen gick att identifiera - Louis Roederer

Nu är dykarna på plats igen och podden är med när de återigen besöker vraket.

Expeditionen går ut på att plocka upp lite fler champagneflaskor, så att fler kemiska analyser kan göras på vinet, men också att ta upp andra föremål som kan berätta mer om skeppet, besättningen och skeppets destinationen.

Som det ser ut i dag så heter skeppet Henrik och bar på en last till tsaren av Ryssland Alexander II.

Vi kommer att få möta både kapten på dykarbåten Espace, Tomasz Stachura, två av dykarna Michal Iwicki OCH Pawel Trusynski. Men även champagneexperten och dykaren Peter Liem

Avslutningsvis kommer vi att få ett kort snack med Magnus Petersson från Länsstyrelsen i Blekinge län.
